Boat? Hike? Picnic? Here’s how we recommend doing Balos like a local
Spoiler: it’s just as stunning as the photos: but better in real life.
Okay. Let’s talk about Balos Beach.
If you’ve already Googled “best beaches in Crete,” I guarantee it’s one of the first names that popped up. That famous turquoise lagoon, white-pink sand, and those wild cliffs around it… yeah, it’s that kind of place. The kind of place that makes you go quiet for a second because it’s just that beautiful.
But here’s the thing: Balos is a little bit of a mission — and that’s part of the charm. So if you’re up for an adventure with a massive reward at the end, this one’s for you.
So how do you get to Balos Beach?
There are two options, and both are great — just depends on your vibe.
🚙 Option 1: Drive + Hike
If you like the idea of a bit of movement and some unforgettable views along the way — drive toward Kolimbary, then continue up to the National road the E65 towards Kissamos until you reach the Balos parking area (we’ll show you on the map). The last 7-8 KM are off-road and quiet rocky, so if you suffer from rocky roads, maybe the boat will be a better option for you.
From the parking spot, it’s about a 20-minute downhill walk to the beach.
Pro tip💡 The walk down & especially back up is a little sweaty, but totally doable if you take your time (and wear real shoes – flip-flops are a no-go).
Having said that, we must add that the view from the top… wow. You’ll get that classic Balos postcard shot before you even reach the sand.
🚤 Option 2: Boat from Kissamos
Not in the mood for dust and hiking? No problem.
You can take a boat from Kissamos Port (about 40 minutes from the hotel). It’s a fun ride, and many of the boats even stop at Gramvousa Island on the way — where you can climb up to an old Venetian fortress and look down over insane blue waters.
This option’s great if you’re with kids, want a chill day, or just prefer gliding into paradise like a boss 😉
Once you’re there…
Let’s just say… you’ll understand why people call it one of the most beautiful places in Europe.
The water is ridiculously clear and shallow for ages, so it’s perfect for floating, wading, or just lying in the shallows like a happy sea creature. The sand has this soft white color with pink hints from crushed shells — totally natural, and yes, it looks amazing in photos.
There aren’t many tavernas or services right on the beach, so pack snacks, water, hats, and sunscreen. If you’re booking a boat trip, they usually include lunch — but if you’re going by car and your a hotel guest, we can totally pack a picnic basket.
(Just tell us the day before — we’ve got a few different versions depending on your budget and what you’re in the mood for: light bites, full meals, or just local snacks + fruit.)
Wanna do it like a pro?
Here’s how we’d do it:
- Morning rooftop stretch or quick class at the hotel
- Grab your picnic basket + towels
- Head out early – especially in summer
- Come back by sunset, salty, happy, tired in the best way
- Shower, change, and straight to a local taverna for wine and delicious traditional dishes (yes, we’ll recommend one if you like)
Final note
Balos isn’t just a beach! It’s an experience.
It’s one of those days you remember when someone asks “what was the highlight of your trip?”
